Top 5 Tips to Get Organized
These are my Top 5 Tips of problem areas that I see with all my clients.
Let’s go through what each one means.
1) Stop all subscriptions is for magazines if you are 2 months or more behind, craft club subscriptions if you haven’t opened the last 2 boxes, kids craft or activity boxes if you don’t find the time or energy to open the last 2 boxes etc. It’ll also help eliminate that guilt every time you see those boxes.
Just call the company or go to their website and cancel the subscription. The stress every time a new box comes in the mail isn’t worth it.
Crafts you can always just have the staple supplies on hand to do everyday children’s art such as construction paper, glue, tape, scissors, stickers, pom poms, pipe cleaners, and felt. If there is a special project, then you can get those supplies from the craft store.
2) Go to your mailbox at least once per week when you know you’ll have at least 15 minutes to go through the mail when you get it home. I like to send my daughter with a friend so she has a job to do and at 11 years old it is a great helpful task. (She began this task before she could walk and took pride in it when she was old enough to walk and carry things)
When she brings it home, I immediately recycle all junk mail, remove all outer envelopes to bills, stack all important bills or mail I need to look at, then place that on my desk. All coupon books are looked through by me or my kids and I tell them what to look for and then we recycle the rest.
3) Open all packages daily so you don’t miss any return windows and can confirm that it is the correct item, it is in good condition, and is actually for you (not a neighbor).
Then break down and recycle the box in the big recycling can. Don’t worry, more boxes will come and your child will let you know when they want one for a project.
I see a lot of clients getting that dopamine when they are online shopping, but they don’t want to do the work to open and store the items.
If that is you, please delete the Amazon and Temu apps and other shopping apps from your phone so online shopping isn’t so easy.
4) Wash dishes daily. Planning a meal, cooking it, and cleaning up from it are all part of one activity and need to be seen that way. The finish line is getting the dishes washed or starting the dishwasher.
So if there isn’t time to do all of those things or energy to do it all, we need to delegate out some of those tasks to family members or not use so many dishes etc.
As soon as my kids were 6 years old we began working on hand washing dishes, but putting away silverware and plastic dishes began around age 3. I can help you on a chore list that’ll work for your family.
5) A to-do list is key in my family so we remember what we need to do and also to delegate chores for others.
If I see my husband needs to do something, I no longer bombard him with all these things when he walks in the door (apparently he didn’t appreciate that), I just write it on his list whether it’s large tasks or small (replace light bulbs, fix a closet door, mow the grass etc).
I hope you find these 5 tips helpful and you can implement them one at a time to a more organized space.
