Break up Those Projects

Sometimes we are so overwhelmed by a task that we don’t even know where to begin.

Some things are worth taking in small bits

  • Plan for a trip
  • Mountain of dishes from a dinner party
  • Weekly family laundry

The easiest thing to do is not to do the whole task at one time.  We need to break it down into smaller bits.   For example, when planning for a trip, I first need to figure out the dates we need off from work and get that approved.  Then I need to see where we are going and get flights, if necessary, and a place to stay. Later, I will make a packing list and arrangements for pets.

Many people are global thinkers and have trouble focusing on the task at hand or just the next step in the process.  If we write down what we need to do and all the steps necessary to do it, we end up with a rather easy to do list.  At times all we need to do for a huge project is to send one email or make one telephone call or send one text, then wait for a response.  Then we can actually take a break from the project while the ball is in another’s court.

We can go from an overwhelming task to taking it in pieces and done in no time.  Just start by writing down that overwhelming task on paper and each step in order in accomplishing it.  Then decide when you will begin.  It’ll start moving along without you having to stress out about that whole huge project.

What is the task that you would call overwhelming right now?

What is the first step in completing that task? Second step?  Third step?  Etc.

Once you start practicing this with all of the overwhelming tasks in life, you will get really good at breaking things down into pieces and things will get done easy as pie (or cake).
